I’m pretty sure most people know now that Krispy Kreme is making vegan doughnuts but what was a huge surprise was to see those options available at major supermarkets for Veganuary.
When I thought it got easier to get my sugar fix while doing my weekly shop, Veganuary ended and with it, the vegan doughnuts at my local Tesco or Sainsbury’s. But luckily for the (not-really) tech-savy vegans, we can still order by the dozen our favorite ones at Krispy Kreme website since these are now an “online exclusive”.

And that’s what I did, I went and I ordered a vegan selection dozen for the family to enjoy it over hot chocolate and these are the highlights of my experience.

Krispy Kreme website states this box is: “Featuring 2 x Fudge Brownie Bliss, 2 x Caramel Choc Delight, and 2 x Apple Custard Crumble, along with 6 of our signature Original Glazed Vegan ring doughnuts”.
While this heavenly box was beyond my wildest dreams I have to tell you someone robbed me the pleasure to have an Apple Custard Crumble doughnut only for me (since I had to share with my hubby) because my order came with only 1 of those and 3 of the Fudge Brownie Bliss. I’m pretty sure is was an honest mistake 😉
But let’s talk about flavours, shall we? And since I couldn’t decided which flavor I liked the most I’m gonna start alphabetically.
The Apple Custard Crumble doughnut is filled with a smooth, flavour-rich, not-to-sweet apple sauce that goes perfectly with a top covering layer of sweet, crispy-enough apple crumble crum with a taste of cinnamon holding to the doughnut thanks to a thin icing layer. When I saw this flavour I immediately paired it with an americano coffee and I found the perfect balance to enjoy it on a Saturday morning.
The Caramel Choc Delight as stated on its name, is covered with caramel icing that reminded me a lot like the traditional caramelized milk or “dulce de leche” that I used to love when I was little. With a touch of dark chocolate on top, this doughnut is perfect to share with a chocolate lover over a foamy cappuccino. This one came with a sweet surprise: a double filling of creamy caramel and Belgian chocolate 🙂
The Fudge Brownie Bliss is a sweet treat so don’t let the dark colour of the chocolate icing fool you. While is clear the chosen chocolate isn’t your regular sugary milk chocolate, it couldn’t be a better option to complement this delightful doughnut inside out because, yes, it is filled with a delicious Belgian chocolate filling. “Fudge Brownie Bliss doughnut is vegan friendly and accredited by the vegan society for anyone following a plant based diet” as read on the official website for Krispy Kreme.

And finally, the Original Glazed Vegan ring doughnuts were by far the biggest surprise of the box 🙂 because they tasted exactly as I remember Krispy Kreme doughnuts taste like: heaven! It’s remarkable how impossible is to tell them apart from the original non-vegan version or at least that’s what I was told by non-vegans enjoying them with me. For me there wasn’t surprise at all that the glazing tasted the same, at the end, I guess sugar is sugar, lol! but the texture, that’s the biggest unexpected feature of this version since that’s what make this flavour so unique. A sugary doughnut can be purchased at many stores nowadays, even a vegan version of it but the texture can be a little gloppy and sugar is always a little greasy like is melting but not with this Krispy Kreme version!
What is incredible about all of the doughnuts is how fluffy and airy they are. Some vegan baked good tend to be heavier than their no-vegan version but these beauties are an extraordinary exception that will fool any non-vegan into believing their are eating “a regular Krispy Kreme doughnut”.

Another great surprise that has nothing to do with the doughnuts itself but it was well received by this hopefully conscious-enough ecovegan friend was the packing and the delivery. Packing is absolutely and only responsibly sourced and sustainable cardboard that keeps the doughnuts in place and prevents the glazed doughnuts from touching the cover and melting the glaze and getting stuck there and then rip in half when one opens the box by creating a smart cardboard triangle that goes in the doughnut hole. It is also said in the box that is delivered carbon neutral by DPD but I didn’t look to much into it and the box doesn’t say anything else about this.
But sadly for us vegans, the amazing flavors created for this box to exist are not available anymore to be bought by itself anywhere. Also, if you want to impress your non-vegan friends by treating them with one of this boxes, plan ahead because you need to allow 2 days for these to reach you or even 1 day to your closest store if you are lucky.
And if you are vegan for dietary reason, remember that the “Vegan doughnuts are prepared to a vegan recipe which has omitted the egg and milk ingredients, making them suitable for vegans. However, whilst we take steps to minimise the risk of cross contamination, we cannot guarantee that the Vegan doughnuts are free from the allergens we handle, including cereals containing gluten, milk, eggs, soya and nuts” as stated on Krispy Kreme website.
But overall, enjoy them guilty free because this are delicious! Exercise later! 🙂
